Firm Profile: Gwathmey Siegel & Associates is one of the country's most acclaimed and honored architectural firms. Since its inception in 1967, its work has ranged in scale from distinguished arts and educational facilities and major corporate buildings to furniture systems and decorative arts objects. In 1994 the office won an international competition to design the Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore, a 75-acre, 2.3 million-square-foot comprehensive university campus. Among its many notable recent achievements are the Contemporary Resort Convention Center at Walt Disney World; the Solomon Equities office building in New York: the School of Agriculture, the Fieldhouse and Basketball Arena, and the Theory Center at the College of Engineering at Cornell University; Werner Otto Hall, The Busch Reisinger Museum, and Fine Arts Library addition to the Fogg Museum at Harvard University; and the restoration and addition to Frank Lloyd Wright's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Projects under construction include the Henry Art Museum, University of Washington, Seattle; the Social Sciences Building at the University of California at San Diego; and the Science, Industry and Business Library of the New York Public Library.
Residential work continues to be a foundation of Gwathmey Siegel's investigations. Since the design of the Gwathmey Residence and Studio in Amagansett in 1964, the building of houses has been seen as an important laboratory for the exploration of architectural strategies. This volume examines developments in the firm's work over the past sixteen years, and features the deMenil, Spielberg, and Bechtler residences, as well as designs for houses in California, New England, Texas, and Taiwan.
