A panel of highly experienced neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, neuropsychologists, and neuroanatomists join forces to create an integrated, cutting-edge survey all of the methodologies necessary for successful surgical treatment. On the surgical side they review a variety of techniques for Parkinson's disease, including thalamotomy, pallidotomy and bilateral pallidotomy, subthalamotomy, pallidal and thalamic deep brain stimulation, and subthalmic deep brain stimulation. Surgical therapy for tremor and dystonia is also covered. On the patient side, the authors systematically examine the key issues involved in any surgical procedure: Patient selection, patient assessment before and after surgery, brain target localization, and postoperative programming of brain stimulators. 000a.pdf......Page 1 000b.pdf......Page 2 000c.pdf......Page 3 000d.pdf......Page 4 000e.pdf......Page 5 000f.pdf......Page 6 000g.pdf......Page 7 Neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, neuropsychologists, and neuroanatomists survey methodologies for surgical treatment of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. On the surgical side they review a variety of techniques for Parkinson's disease, including thalamotomy, pallidotomy and bilateral pallidotomy, subthalamotomy, and pallidal, thalamic, and subthalamic deep brain stimulation. Surgical treatment for tremor and dystonia is also covered. On the patient side, contributors examine issues involved in patient selection, brain target localization, and postoperative programming of brain stimulators. Description:This volume in the Current Clinical Neurology series is dedicated to a very specific area in the treatment of various movement disorders -- surgical management of medically refractory cases of Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia. It gives an overview of available surgical techniques, indications for surgeries, patient assessment tools, along with some general principles and theoretical and practical procedural aspects.
Purpose:The editors' objective is "to create a reference handbook that describes methodologies ... necessary to carry out neurosurgical procedures for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders." This is a great goal, and the book definitely fulfills it.
Audience:The book is designed for neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and other health professionals who are involved in the treatment of patients with movement disorders. Although not deep enough to be a complete surgical textbook, this volume is perfect for those who evaluate the patients and refer them for surgery, primarily neurologists and general practitioners. It may also be used as an educational resource for residents and fellows interested in this subject. Most authors of the book are well-known specialists from several North American and European centers that have extensive experience in this field.
Features:The book is divided into four parts: the first deals with basic principles of basal ganglia organization and overview of surgeries; the second describes each particular surgical modality and target applicable to treatment of different types of tremor and Parkinson's disease; the third section deals with surgical options for generalized and segmental dystonia; and the last section details future directions in surgical treatment, reviews transplantation and use of PET scanning. The best feature of the book is its easy-to-read text with nice black-and-white illustrations. Its compact size did not permit editors to include some of the topics, but it makes it even more attractive for those who are interested in learning about the state-of-the-art in movement disorder surgery.
Assessment:This is an excellent resource for neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other practitioners who work in the field of movement disorders. Written and edited by experts in the field, the book provides concise but comprehensive reviews of the current thought on patient selection, surgical techniques, and even postoperative management of these complicated patients.

There has been a resurgence in stereotactic surgery for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, tremor, and dystonia, and with it a growing need for up-to-date information about these procedures. In Surgical Treatment of Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders, a panel of highly experienced neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, neuropsychologists, and neuroanatomists join forces to create an integrated, cutting-edge survey of all the methodologies necessary for successful surgical treatment. On the surgical side they review a variety of techniques for Parkinson's disease, including thalamotomy, pallidotomy and bilateral pallidotomy, subthalamotomy, pallidal and thalamic deep brain stimulation, and subthalamic deep brain stimulation. Surgical therapy for tremor and dystonia is also covered. On the patient side, the authors systematically examine the key issues involved in patient selection, patient assessment before and after surgery, brain target localization, and postoperative programming of brain stimulators. Comprehensive and authoritative, Surgical Treatment of Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders integrates the diverse techniques now available in this rapidly growing field to provide a practical guide to effective treatment of patients afflicted with these disorders. In Surgical Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease And Other Movement Disorders, A Panel Of Highly Experienced Neurosurgeons, Neurophysiologists, Neuropsychologists, And Neuroanatomists Join Forces To Create An Integrated, Cutting-edge Survey All Of The Methodologies Necessary For Successful Surgical Treatment. Insights into the structure and function of the basal ganglia and their role in the pathophysiology of movement disorders resulted in the 1980s in the development of testable models of hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders.
