While the development of material civilization and industrialization initiated by the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century made possible a more comfortable life for mankind, it caused a concentration of human resources and led to rapid urbanization around the world. Consequently, a multitude of environmental problems such as global warming, disruption of the e- system, depletion of natural resources, and the accumulation of waste have become international issues. Urbanization accelerated the construction of super high-rise buildings, huge complex facilities, and stacked-up networks of roads and railways. At the same time, however, it resulted in crowded city blocks that were fragile and vulnerable to natural disasters such as ear- quakes, tsunamis, and floods, and in historical structures becoming ruined and cultural urban space exhausted. Maintenance and repair of the amassed stock of structures are causing an economic burden today. Against this background, the Urban Stock Management Research Group in the Center for Sustainable Urban Regeneration (cSUR) at the University of Tokyo has conducted research to develop integrated methods to maintain existing urban assets and to conserve the cultural/social context of urban environments. Urban stock management, such as conservation, utilization, and renovation, is vital for simultaneously supporting urban history, culture, changing lifestyles, and other conflicting elements. Therefore, new en- neering for renovation and utilization of urban stock is urgently required to maintain safety, the environment, and continuing comfort as well as to save natural resources and reduce wastes. Deals with theories and technologies for longevity, maintenance, disaster prevention, risk management, renovation and recycling of infrastructure as well as historical and cultural approaches to city and architectural planning. This book is suitable for working architects, civil engineers, city planners, and government officials. This book deals with theories and technologies for longevity, maintenance, disaster prevention, risk management, renovation and recycling of infrastructure as well as historical and cultural approaches to city and architectural planning. Essential knowledge for comprehensive urban stock management is included for an easy understanding of the utilization, operation, and planning of urban stock. Among the topics are conservation of historical heritages and modern stocks, risk assessment, management and monitoring of stocks, the disaster-resistant city, and recycling of construction materials. With contributions from a variety of disciplines such as material science, structural engineering, risk management, environmental engineering, and history, the book is a useful reference for undergraduate and graduate students in civil engineering, architecture, and city planning, and also provides valuable information for working architects, civil engineers, city planners, and government officials Front Matter....Pages i-x Stock Management of Civil Engineering Infrastructure in Asia....Pages 1-14 Overview of Building Stock Management in Japan....Pages 15-32 Renovation of Modern Stock....Pages 33-55 Why and How We Should Inherit Urban Environmental Cultural Resources: Identifying, Listing, Evaluating, and Making Good Use of Urban Environmental Cultural Resources in Asia....Pages 57-65 New Urban Strategy for Provincial Cities in Japan....Pages 67-80 Life-Span Simulation of Reinforced Concrete Structures: Toward Rational Stock Management....Pages 81-100 Anti-seismic Design, Diagnostics and Reinforcement for Concrete Structures....Pages 101-132 Earthquake-Resistant Engineering of Steel Structures....Pages 133-156 Wide-Roof Buildings in Earthquakes....Pages 157-190 Antiseismic Design: From Houses to Large Enclosures Wooden Houses....Pages 191-205 Integrated Earthquake Simulation of Earthquake Hazard and Disaster....Pages 207-231 Risk Assessment, Management and Monitoring of Infrastructure Systems....Pages 233-253 Resource Recycling in Concrete: Present and Future....Pages 255-274 Use of Municipal Waste Island for New Urban Development....Pages 275-299
