Certainly our nation has its faults, but in our system of government is contained the mechanism for correcting them. I think the record will show that the United States has corrected more of its faults and has overcome more of its shortcomings than any other nation in all history. And I think a dispassionate evaluation of our current problems will reveal that most of them are caused and contrived by people who have somehow lost the simple patriotic faith of our fathers. They are so intent on pointing out the motes that they have overlooked the basic beauty and wholesomeness that still prevail in our land and in our people. If my message to my fellow citizens were to be summed up in a single phrase, it would be: "Let's Stand Up for America!" With those memorable words, George C. Wallace ends his intimate, highly personal, yet intensely political autobiography. A man’s background, his parents, and his early years set the pattern for his life, and the story is all here in Governor Wallace’s own words: the growing-up years in small-town Clio, Alabama; star quarterback for the high school team at 115 pounds; the Golden Gloves competition; more football plus boxing and debating at the University of Alabama, and then law school. In 1942 Wallace entered the aviation cadet training program and flew many combat missions in the Pacific as a flight engineer in B-29's. Years of law practice followed and then a judgeship before Wallace was elected governor of Alabama. Woven into this narrative is Wallace’s romance with Lurleen Burns, who became his wife and later was elected governor. After Lurleen’s tragic death Wallace married Cornelia Folsom Snively, niece of “Big Jim” Folsom. And in 1972, in Laurel, Maryland, came the terrible day when Arthur Bremer fired the shots that almost killed Wallace and left him paralyzed from the waist down. That might have been the end of the story, but it was not and is not. Governor Wallace has continued his political career with tremendous drive and energy. In this book he tells why he will not give up, why he continues to fight for what he knows Americans want and need. This is a spiritual book, a revealing book, and an inspiring political testament. 1. Appointment in Laurel 2. Clio and Calomel 3. Barbour Bantam 4. Sentimental Journey 5. Years of Judgment 6.
