Traces the relationship between the USSR, Israel, and Soviet Jews in the Stalinist period. Israel was established with the support of the USSR, but at the same time repressions were instigated against the Jews in the Soviet state. Chs. 6-10 (pp. 209-357) deal with consecutive antisemitic campaigns in the USSR and in the satellite communist states, beginning with the campaign against the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. Other campaigns were mounted against "cosmopolitanism", the main victim being the Jewish intelligentsia. Discusses the Slánský trial in Czechoslovakia and the "Doctors' Plot" in the USSR. Examines the role of antisemitism in Stalin's policy. Concludes that Stalin's choice to use antisemitism, and to present the Jews as the enemy, was a rational move and not an effect of his paranoia. The anti-Jewish campaigns were prepared rationally and relied on popular antisemitism which was always strong in Russian society.
