C omment écrire la vie d'un homme qui, plus qu'aucun autre dans l'histoire, a manipulé les éléments biographiques et terrorisé son entourage au point que même après sa mort il était toujours dangereux d'en parler ? C'est le pari qu'a relevé Robert Service dans cette remarquable biographie fondée sur des archives neuves, officielles comme privées. Il brosse le portrait d'un " petit père des peuples " plus complexe, contradictoire et bigarré qu'on ne le croit généralement. Car si Staline est bien un révolutionnaire paranoïaque, un manipulateur sans scrupule et un despote sanguinaire, il est aussi un guide (un *Vojd*), un écrivain, poète à ses heures, un théoricien, un amateur d'art et un père de famille... En racontant Staline, de ses jeunes années de séminariste puis nationaliste géorgien à son rôle à la tête de l'Union soviétique, Service met en lumière la personnalité et la psychologie ahurissante du tsar rouge. Enseignant à l'université d'Oxford, Robert Service est l'auteur de magistrales biographies de Trotski (Perrin, 2011, prix du " Meilleur livre d'histoire " du magazine* Lire*) et de Lénine (Perrin, 2012).
