Spenser's Proverb Lore: With Special Reference to His Use of the <i>Sententiae</i> of Leonard Culman and Publilius Syrus

Charles Smith presents an exhaustive collection of proverbs from the works of Edmund Spenser and gives their Elizabethan and classical backgrounds. Of the 892 proverbs included in this book, 743 are identified for the first time. The author points out the various devices used by Spenser in emphasizing the many proverbs in the Shepheard’s Calender and in other poems and demonstrates the extent and importance of proverbial wisdom in Spenser’s thought.
