Sozietäten, Netzwerke, Kommunikation : Neue Forschungen zur Vergesellschaftung im Jahrhundert der Aufklärung

Die Sozietäten rücken neuerdings wieder verstärkt in den Blick bei der Erforschung des 18. Jahrhunderts. Standen früher vor allem die sogenannten 'Aufklärungsgesellschaften' im Mittelpunkt, zieht nun ein breiteres Spektrum von Gesellschaftsbildungen die Aufmerksamkeit von Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaftlern verschiedenster Disziplinen auf sich. Verbindendes Element ist das gemeinsame Interesse an der Ausbildung von Soziabilität, Netzwerken und Kommunikationsstrukturen. Der im Titel formulierte Dreischritt hat somit programmatischen Charakter: Studien zu einzelnen Sozietäten und Mitgliedern sowie Analysen personeller und institutioneller Netzwerke bilden die Grundlage für ein sich abzeichnendes Bild einer Kommunikationsgeschichte der Vergesellschaftung im 18. Jahrhundert.

When the University of Halle-Wittenberg founded the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies in 1993, it was following the destiny of its history as a centre of the early Enlightenment in Germany which affected the whole of Europe. Research foci of the Centre are at the moment aesthetics, discourses of history, cultures of learning and erudition, university history and not least the wide field of early Enlightenment as a field of experimentation and the foundation of cultural models for the Modern Age.

The results of this research have been published since Autumn 1995 in the Centres’ research publications series entitled University of Halle Series on the European Enlightenment. In addition, there have been relevant works produced outside the Centre. Two to four volumes are published annually (monographs, collected volumes, commentaries on sources).

Main description: Recently, societies have come in for increasing attention in research on the 18th century. Earlier the emphasis was on the so-called 'Enlightenment societies' but now a broader range of societalization processes have attracted the interest of humanities scholars and cultural studies experts. Common to them all is an interest in the emergence of sociability, networks and communication structures. This is reflected programmatically in the title of the volume. Studies on individual societies and their members join with analyses of personal and institutional networks to form the basis for an emergent picture of the communicative history of societalization in the 18th century
