Soziale Ausgrenzung im Medium der Predigt : Der franziskanische Antijudaismus im spätmittelalterlichen Italien

Die Geschichte der Juden in der christlichen Welt des ­Mittelalters ist eine Geschichte zunehmender gesellschaftlicher Marginalisierung. Als entscheidendes Medium gilt dabei ­gemeinhin die Predigt. Der Autor untersucht den predigt­gebundenen Antijudaismus am Beispiel franziskanischer ­Prediger im spätmittelalterlichen Italien im Kontext politischer Kommunikation und Praxis. Die Prediger wussten um eine Toleranz, die Christen Juden schulden sollten, scheuten sich aber nicht, antijüdische Fiktionen einzusetzen, um einer diskriminierenden Judenfeindschaft das Wort zu reden, mit der sich Forderungen nach sozialer Ab- und Ausgrenzung von Juden verbanden. Wie sie dazu beitrugen, Juden aus christ­lichen Stadtgesellschaften des Späten Mittelalters auszugrenzen, wird am Beispiel Paduas dargestellt. Examines the antisemitic sermons delivered by Franciscan preachers in Italy during the 15th century, focusing on events in Padova. Discusses whether the sermons engendered a campaign of social segregation of Jews, which adversely affected traditional Christian policies of tolerance and led to an exclusion of Jews from the majority Christian society. Argues that, while a differentiation of the "Other" was constitutive for the Christians' own religious identity, missionary activities since the 13th century, whose preachings included Christian supersessionism, led to an increase in anti-Judaism. The anti-Jewish representations in the sermons were also meant to mirror the sinfulness of the Christian audience. Through a pejorative description of the Jewish faith, a positive Christian counter-image was created. Relations between Padova's municipal authorities and the preachers were characterized by cooperation but also contradiction. When the authorities condoned the ethical rigorism of the preachers, economic problems arose (due to the Jews' role in the economy), and when not, then they felt threatened by Divine punishment.
