South India -- Yesterday, today and tomorrow: Mysore villages revisited

My FOREMOST thanks are due to Mr Schönherr without whose initiative my return to South India might never have come about. He, together with his colleague, Mr Sen Gupta, and Professor Wurzbacher of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, not only encouraged me to revisit in 1970 the Mysore villages I had studied in 1954-56 but also facilitated the collection of the data on which this book is based. They made available to me their experienced research assistants, Mr B. R. Dwaraki, Miss Leela, Miss Rekha Subbiah and Mr B. V. Raman, whose help I gratefully acknowledge. They also let me have some of the preliminary results of their overall village census which enabled me. to concentrate on collecting case material during the short period I could spend in the villages.
