«Chiedo perdono a tutti coloro che si sentono traditi... Questa storia è sì la mia, però non la vera realtà ma piuttosto la mia realtà, la mia maniera di sopravvivere...» Queste le parole della confessione di Misha Defonseca alla fine del mese di febbraio 2008. L’antefatto: oltre dieci anni fa Misha ha conquistato la fama con un libro autobiografico in cui raccontava di come dal 1941 al 1945 aveva attraversato l’Europa a piedi, dal Belgio all’Ucraina, da sola, alla ricerca dei suoi genitori deportati nei lager nazisti. In questo viaggio, aveva affrontato mille difficoltà, pericoli umani e naturali, aveva più volte camminato al fianco della morte, e a un certo punto era anche stata adottata da una famiglia di lupi, gli unici esseri viventi che si erano occupati di lei, l’avevano scaldata, nutrita, protetta. Il libro è diventato immediatamente un best seller internazionale, tradotto in diciotto paesi: milioni di lettori si sono commossi leggendo la storia sconvolgente di questa bambina alla disperata ricerca della sua mamma. Nel momento in cui il successo del libro è stato consacrato anche da un film, l’autrice ha ammesso di avere inventato questa «favola drammatica» per salvarsi da una realtà dolorosa, quella della guerra, dalle accuse fatte a suo padre – nella Resistenza belga – di aver parlato sotto tortura. E questa favola col tempo si è impadronita di lei, fino a confondersi con i suoi ricordi, con la verità storica. Raccontare storie cura le ferite dell’anima, tiene lontani gli incubi, aiuta a sopravvivere. Noi questo libro lo abbiamo pubblicato nel 1998 per la prima volta credendo nel suo valore di testimonianza, e lo abbiamo ripubblicato nel 2008 in una nuova versione perché abbiamo creduto a tutti i lettori che lo hanno amato nel corso degli anni, si sono emozionati e hanno partecipato al dolore di questa bambina: abbiamo pensato, e pensiamo tuttora, che questa storia, benché frutto di fantasia, valga ancora la pena di essere letta.

Though the writer kept detailed diaries of his days and work, Conan Doyle never explained this sudden change of heart.
