Abstract This book focuses on the contributions that organic farming offers to wider social change. It considers the role of all those involved in creating an organic sector. By providing a range of quantitative and qualitative analyses of organic 'farm-to-fork' networks, the book shows how the way organic farming is practiced holds the potential for changes in industry structure - changes that may well form the basis for the food system in the 21st century. The book's 18 chapters are organized around five themes that reflect the continuing development of organic farming and the diversity of the sociological approach to organic food and farming. These themes include: (i) organic movements in northwestern Europe; (ii) organic food quality and the consumer; (iii) problems for organic farmers around the globe; (iv) principles and practice of organic farming; and (v) new directions for organic sector development. The book has a subject index. Sociological Perspectives Of Organic Agriculture : An Introduction / M. Reed And G. Holt -- What Farmers' Markets Say About The Post-organic Movement In Ireland / O. Sociological Perspectives of Organic Research: To Policy and Beyond 296 Index 317 ISBN-13:,9781845930387 The organic farming movement continues to be one of the most dynamic influences on contemporary global agriculture. Organic agriculture is recognized as beneficial to the environment and increasingly acts as a focal point for understanding changes in both the food industry and consumer attitudes and behavior. Largely due to the success of local alliances between consumers and producers, the debate surrounding the pros and cons of organic agriculture is now embedded in not only agricultural but also economic and social development policy forums across the world. This book focuses on the contributions that organic farming offers to wider social change. The book considers the role of all those involved in creating an organic sector. By providing a range of quantitative and qualitative analysis of organic 'farm to folk' networks, the book shows how the way organic farming is practiced holds the potential for changes in industry structure -- changes that may well form the basis for the food system in the 21st century. -- From publisher's description This book takes a fresh look at understanding the dynamics of the organic agricultural sector in Europe, Australia, South America and the US. Many of the authors explore the use of combined methodology, drawing on theory from a range of social sciences to demonstrate that the complexity of organic agriculture lies in the close connection between nature, society and the economy. Likewise, whilst the book depicts organic agriculture as an engine of growth for the organic sector, it reflects also the important role played by, not only producers but also, other actors in the supply chain, such as consumers and certification standards. Covers how ideational change came about to enhance the understanding of change within the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and to plan and implement change in European agriculture policy. This book features contents that cover institutional change within the CAP and focus on the institutional construction policy concerned with organic farming This book takes a fresh look at understanding the dynamics of the organic agricultural sector. It explores the use of combined methodology, drawing on theory from a range of social sciences to demonstrate that the complexity of organic agriculture lies in the close connection between nature, society and the economy.
