Slovenia: Economic Transformation and Eu Accession : Summary Report (World Bank Country Study)

This country study consists of two volumes. Volume I is a summary report that condenses main findings and conclusions. This volume focuses mainly on elimination of the remaining structural weaknesses as means to maintain the macroeconomic stability while increasing the competitiveness of the Slovene economy abroad, and redefining the size and roles of the public and private sectors. Volume II is the main report. It provides the assessment and technical analysis of selected key sectors of the Slovene economy. This volume is structured as follows: Chapter 1 reviews the economic performance during the economic transition. Chapter 2 analyzes growth and income convergence issues in relation with the EU (European Union) accession process. Chapter 3 studies the environment sector and the costs of implementing the EU directives. Chapter 4 provides an assessment of the foreign trade sector. Chapter 5 covers the challenges of the financial sector. Chapter 6 reviews enterprise sector issues. Chapter 7 studies the labor markets and social policies. Chapter 8 analyzes the agricultural sector in light of the fragile Slovene ecosystems. Finally, chapter 9 studies the capacity of the municipal governments to deliver efficient and cost effective public services
