Sicily occupies a crucial position in the Mediterranean world. It is at the heart of many cross-currents of trade, people, and ideology that flowed unceasingly through the ancient period. The island was home to many people, most of them not native to it: Phoenicians, Greeks, and then Romans settled there, and sought ways of expressing their hybrid identities. The Sicilians, no less than their invaders, were concerned with their image and their contribution to the age. In this volume ideas of identity, image and acculturation are the central themes. The contributions combine detailed investigation of the archaeological finds in which the island abounds, with an examination of the understudied tradition of history and literature on or about the island. The book provides a chronological account of the island's history, interwoven with a series of discussions of Sicilian identity: to show Sicily as a centre of affairs from the Iron Age to the Augustan Empire within the context of a fundamentally region CONTENTS 6 Preface 8 List of contributors 9 List of abbreviations 10 List of figures 14 1 Introduction 16 Part I: Sicily and colonisation 22 2 Sicily from pre-Greek times to the fourth century 24 3 Indigenous society between the ninth and sixth centuries BC: territorial, urban and social evolution 30 4 Wine wares in protohistoric eastern Sicily 56 5 Greeks bearing gifts: religious relationships between Sicily and Greece in the archaic period 70 Part II: Greek settlement in Sicily 86 6 Coin types and identity: Greek cities in Sicily 88 7 Sicily in the Athenian imagination: Thucydides and the Persian Wars 99 8 The tyrant's myth 112 Part III: The coming of the Romans 122 9 The coming of the Romans: Sicily from the fourth to the first century BC 124 10 Garrisons and grain: Sicily between the Punic Wars 130 11 Ciceronian Sicily: an archaeological perspective 149 12 Between Greece and Italy: an external perspective on culture in Roman Sicily 176 13 The charm of the Siren: the place of classical Sicily in historiography 189 Notes 209 Bibliography 225 Index 250 SOURCES 250 A 250 C 250 D 250 E 251 F 251 H 251 J 251 L 251 M 252 N 252 P 252 S 252 T 252 V 253 X 253 Z 253 GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES 253 A 253 B 254 C 254 D 254 E 254 F 254 G 254 H 254 I 254 K 254 L 254 M 254 N 254 O 254 P 254 R 255 S 255 T 255 V 255 Z 255 PEOPLE 255 A 255 C 255 D 255 G 255 H 255 K 255 L 255 M 255 N 255 O 255 P 255 S 255 T 255 V 256 X 256 SUBJECTS 256 A 256 B 256 C 256 D 256 E 256 F 256 G 256 H 256 J 256 L 256 M 256 O 256 P 256 R 256 S 256 T 256 V 256 W 256 This Volume Provides A Chronological Account Of The Island's History, Interwoven With Discussions Of Sicilian Identity, To Show Sicily As A Centre Of Affairs Within The Context Of A Fundamentally Regional Ancient World.
