You will probably be familiar, at least in outline, with the following account of how Philip Sidney left the battlefield at Zutphen, having received what was to prove a fatal wound, his leg shattered by a musket ball, being thirsty with excess of bleeding, he called for drink, which was presently brought to him; but as he was putting the bottle to his mouth, he saw a poor soldier carried along who had eaten his last at the same feast, ghastly casting up his eyes at the bottle. Sir Philip Sydney was born in 1534 and by the time of his death only 32 years later had come to exemplify the ideal courtier.
