The goal of this text is to provide apractical and thorough guide to each of the common studies you will encounter in radiology.Emphasis will be placed on known blind spots, their incorporation into practice habits, and anorganized approach to examine all relevant anatomy. This is not a resource meant to be read cover to cover. It is a guide intended forresidents along the duration of their training and for other learners returning to areas ofradiology after prolonged absence. Several sections contain generalizable concepts, which applyto multiple study types. The last chapters on checklists for workflow and consultation arerelevant for all radiologists. Concepts in the section on "last checks" are referenced throughoutthe text, and constitute themes for what we should address with each exam to avoid making themost serious misses. Aside from these instances, the reader is encouraged to refer to specifictopics as needed. Bringing up specific guides simultaneous with learning to interpret studies canbuild good habits from the onset. This can be done for example, with either a digital or printversion of this text. Once you've internalized a thorough process, external reminders may not beneeded. This text is written with the assumption that the reader has some familiarity with basicradiologic terminology, anatomy, and physics. Little discussion is provided on the radiologicappearance of disease, differential diagnosis, or management as these are covered well elsewhere. The goal is to provide an organizational framework to use knowledge rather than the knowledgeitself. The reader is encouraged to look up terms and integrate background reading as they workthrough any process. Recommended reading and selected references are included at the end ofthe book. This text is now associated with free online teaching, covering the 50+ most common studies in radiology This text is now available as an ebook Search Pattern is a collection of step-by-step guides to more than a hundred of the most common types of studies in radiology. Blind spots reported in the literature as well as practical wisdom from experts is synthesized into highly structured processes that can guide the development of better practice. Much of the contained insight has never been organized in one place before. Search Pattern covers almost every type of study that a radiologist will encounter in training or practice. This text is written with the assumption that the reader has familiarity with basic radiologic terminology, anatomy, and physics. In the interest of brevity, almost all information outside of the organized approaches is omitted. The reader is encouraged to look up terms, images, and background information from supplementary resources. Formalized teaching of search patterns is a missing part of the educational literature in our field. Hopefully this book helps fill that void. It is one that I would have benefited from greatly when I was a resident. - Long Tu, YDR Class of 2020 "Search Pattern is a collection of step-by-step guides to more than a hundred of the most common types of studies in radiology.
