Salinity and Water Use : A National Symposium on Hydrology, Sponsored by the Australian Academy of Science, 2–4 November 1971

The Academy of Science's National Committee on Hydrology conceived this second National Symposium on Hydrology as an opportunity for an exchange of expertise and views between various natural and (some) social sciences involved in the problems arising from natural and man-made salinity. Such an exchange must expedite the incorporation of scientific knowledge into technical management. We hoped to enlist authoritative speakers, each of whom would provide an up-to-date review of his field. We emphasized to all prospective contributors our hope that they would go to some trouble to make their material understandable not only to their fellow specialists, but also to members of other scientific disciplines and professions taking part in the Symposium who were concerned with salinity. That we have succeeded in getting authoritative contributors there is no doubt and, we are pleased to say, most have managed to cast aside the jargon of their speciality. The result is, we feel, a collection of basic material which offers an invaluable scientific background to the practical hydrologic problems of salinity in the Australian continent and throughout the world. One experimental aspect of these proceedings is that they have been published before the Symposium itself. We have aimed to avoid the all-toocommon and deplorable long delay between the event and the publication, which so often reduces the immediacy and the value of symposium proceedings.
