Salamon und Rabeka: Judenstereotype in Karikaturen der türkischen Zeitschriften Akbaba, Karikatür und Milli Inkilap 1933-1945 (ISSN) (German Edition)

The series Islamkundliche Untersuchungen was founded in 1969 by the Klaus Schwarz Verlag. Since then, it has become one of the most important venues for publications in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. Its more than 350 volumes cover a wide range of topics from the history, culture and societies of the Middle East and North Africa as well as neighboring regions in central, south and southeast Asia. Examines caricatures of Jews in the Turkish satirical periodicals "Akbaba" and "Karikatür", and in the journal "Millî İnkilâp" during the Nazi period (the latter appearing only in 1933-1934). Analysis of 487 caricatures shows that mainly Jewish men were represented, portrayed with large, warped noses, broad lips, large eyes, and thick eyebrows, and dressed in black jackets and round black hats. The men were characterized as avaricious, selfish, cowardly, dirty, unpatriotic, and despicable. Notes parallels with Turkish clichés of the Ottoman period and similarities with European caricatures.
