Description: A compilation by one of Tibet's greatest Buddhist masters of the Path with Its Result teachings and practices of the Sakya lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The Treasury of Precious Instructions by Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Taye, one of Tibet's greatest Buddhist masters, is a shining jewel of Tibetan literature, presenting essential teachings from the entire spectrum of practice lineages that existed in Tibet. Volumes in this series may be engaged as practice manuals while also preserving ancient teachings significant to the literature and history of world religions. Volume 5 of the series, Sakya: The Path with Its Result, presents a selection of teachings and practices from the Path with Its Result (Lamdre) practice lineage of the Sakya tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Sakya lineage derives from Virupa, Dombhi Heruka, and other Indian masters, or mahasiddhas, and passes through Gayadhara and his Tibetan disciple Drokmi Lotsawa Sakya Yeshe (992–1072). The practice tradition centers around the teaching and transmission of the Hevajra Tantra and its subsidiary texts. In three parts, this volume includes, respectively: the root text, commentary, and outlines for the Indian mahasiddha Virupa’s core text, the Vajra Verses; the liturgies for empowerment and offering rituals specific to a Hevajra Tantra practice lineage; and instructional manuals for practice. About the AuthorS JAMGÖN KONGTRUL LODRÖ TAYE (1813–1900) was a versatile and prolific scholar and one of the most outstanding writers and teachers of his time in Tibet. He was a pivotal figure in eastern Tibet’s nonsectarian movement and made major contributions to education, politics, and medicine. MALCOLM SMITH is a translator of classical Tibetan. He began his studies of Tibetan Buddhism in the Sakya school in 1989 and entered a traditional three-year solitary retreat in 1993. In 2004, he was awarded the ācārya degree by Khenpo Migmar Tseten of the Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies. In 2009, he graduated from Shang Shung Institute's School of Tibetan Medicine. His principal gurus are H.H. Sakya Trichen and the late Chogyal Namkhai Norbu (1938–2018). "This volume introduces readers to volume 5 of The Treasury of Precious Instructions, the first volume that treats the teachings of the Sakya school. The Sakya school's principal teaching is known as Lamdré or the Path With Its Result. According to traditional Sakya sources, Lamdré was first taught some 1200 years or so following the parinirvāṇa of the Buddha by the Mahāsiddha Virūpa to Kanha, the lesser of his two disciples. It was passed down as an oral tradition through a series of Indian siddhas and entered Tibet in the middle of the 11th century, and finally written down in 1141 CE by Sachen Kunga Nyingpo. While the details of that story are fairly well known and have been written upon quite a bit, much less is known by the general reader about the portrayal of the rise of Secret Mantra Vajrayāna and the origins of the Hevajra cycle of tantras according to the Sakya tradition"
