Dieser Band enthält die philosophischen Schriften aus der Zeit in Paris und der anschließenden Reise nach Hannover in acht Abteilungen: A. Specimina physica B. De theologia philosophi C. Excerpta ac edenda D. Annotata E. De arte inveniendi F. De summa rerum G. Definitionum juris specimen H. De vita beata. Sämtliche Stücke wurden aus den Handschriften bzw. Handexemplaren erarbeitet; keines ist von Leibniz selbst zum Druck gegeben worden, wenngleich er einigen eine weitgehend abgeschlossene Form gegeben hat. Breiten Raum nimmt zunächst der Ausbau der neuen physikalischen Hypothese ein, deren Thematik 1676 erstmals aufgenommen wird. Neben Entwürfen zur Methodologie findet man unter dem Leibnizschen Titel „De summa rerum“ bemerkenswerte Stücke zur Metaphysik, eine Art philosophischen Tagebuchs.
