European philosophy from the late seventeenth century through most of the eighteenth is broadly conceived as the "Enlightenment, " a period of empiricist reaction to the great seventeenth century Rationalists. This volume begins with Herbert of Cherbury and the Cambridge Platonists and with Newton and the early English Enlightenment. Locke is a key figure, as a result of his importance both in the development of British and Irish philosophy and because of his seminal influence in the Enlightenment as a whole. British Philosophy and the Age of the Enlightenment includes discussion of the Scott Enlightenment and its influence on the German Aufklaring, and consequently on Kant. The French Enlightenment, which in turn affected the late radical Enlightenment, especially Bentham, is also considered here. This survey brings together clear, authorative chapters from leading experts and provides a scholarly introduction to this period in the history of philosophy. It includes a glossary of technical terms and a chronological table of important political, philosophical, scientific and other cultural events.--Provided by publisher Cover Page......Page 1 Routledge History of Philosophy, Volume V......Page 2 Title Page......Page 5 ISBN 041505379X......Page 6 Contents......Page 7 General editors’ preface......Page 8 Notes on contributors......Page 10 Chronology......Page 12 Introduction......Page 42 CHAPTER 1 Lord Herbert of Cherbury and the Cambridge Platonists......Page 57 CHAPTER 2 Science and British philosophy: Boyle and Newton......Page 76 CHAPTER 3 Locke: knowledge and its limits......Page 97 CHAPTER 4 Locke’s political theory......Page 119 CHAPTER 5 George Berkeley......Page 142 CHAPTER 6 David Hume on human understanding......Page 164 CHAPTER 7 Hume: moral and political philosophy......Page 188 CHAPTER 8 British moralists of the eighteenth century: Shaftesbury, Butler and Price......Page 207 CHAPTER 9 The French Enlightenment I: science, materialism and determinism......Page 227 CHAPTER 10 The French Enlightenment II: deism, morality and politics......Page 246 CHAPTER 11 The Scottish Enlightenment......Page 265 CHAPTER 12 The German Aufklärung and British philosophy......Page 294 CHAPTER 13 Giambattista Vico......Page 314 CHAPTER 14 Rousseau and Burke......Page 334 Glossary......Page 355 Index of subjects......Page 363 Index of names......Page 373
