Thoroughly examining tuberculosis from historical, theoretical, and clinical perspectives, this Third Edition merges state-of-the-art research developments with principles of programmatic TB management. Each of the 50 chapters analyze current studies on TB mechanisms and treatment and will meet the needs of all who work in the field of TB control, whether in low-income, high-prevalence areas or in low-prevalence industrialized countries. Doody Review Services Reviewer: Joel C Seidman, MD(William Beaumont Hospitals) Description: This book, part of the long-running Lung Biology in Health and Disease series, is an up-to-date resource on the microbiology, epidemiology and public health consequences, individual patient clinical presentation and natural history, and the rational pharmacotherapy and community means of control of tuberculous mycobacterial disease currently as well as what might be anticipated in the near future. It is the result of the basic science and clinical experience of an international cast of experts, appropriately so, since treatment, primarily as a result of the emergence of resistance organisms, varies significantly with world geography. The two previous editions were published in 1990 and 2000. Purpose: In aggregate, a comprehensive attempt is made to adopt observations of authorities from diverse, worldwide experience, providing a comprehensive, up-to-date reference for investigators and practitioners. Audience: While the two-volume text is extraordinarily comprehensive and provides content beyond that required for practical application by the typical practitioner in any geographic venue, it is arranged in a manner and with suitable indexing that selective perusal would prove rewarding to members of any discipline committed to managing the worldwide scourge of this disease, an infection which still claims, worldwide, 8.9 million new victims and kills 1.7 million annually. Features: The focus primarily is upon outlining the supportive science, clinical investigation, and personal practice experience of numerous experts to guide the rational pharmacotherapy of typical tuberculosis. While a review of typical tuberculosis and its therapeutics is hardly novel, this book does provide some unique elements. Various consensus guidelines offered previously by expert panels are reviewed, and the rationale for advocating various pharmaceuticals in a particular scheme are explored thoroughly, addressing controversies and alternatives. Finally, future directions in therapy are explored. Assessment: The book achieves its likely intended goals well. The shortening time interval between editions testifies to the rapidity with which new information continues to accrue wherein "the book's 50 chapters bring together our current knowledge of tuberculosis, its control, and related scientific discoveries."
