Shahar Hameiri argues that state building interventions are creating a new form of transnationally regulated statehood. Using case-studies from the Asia-Pacific, he analyzes the politics of state building and the implications for contemporary statehood and the global order. In the post-Cold War years failed states have become a major security concern for policymakers. Prevalent scholarly approaches evaluate state building interventions in terms of whether they produce 'more' or 'less' state. In contrast, Shahar Hameiri argues that state building interventions are creating a new form of transnationally regulated statehood. Using case-studies from the Asia-Pacific, he analyzes the politics of state building and the implications for contemporary statehood and the global order. This book examines the effects of state building on the distribution, production and reproduction of political power: Who rules and how? What conflicts are engendered or exacerbated by state building, and how are they managed? What coalitions support the production or reproduction of power relationships associated with these interventions? It establishes that whether or not such interventions meet their objectives, they have led to the emergence of anti-pluralist forms of political rule within and between states Front Matter....Pages i-xii Introduction: Regulatory State Building and the Transformation of Statehood....Pages 1-9 Beyond Methodological Nationalism, Towards a New Regulatory Framework....Pages 10-38 State Building, Risk Management and the Transformation of the State....Pages 39-63 State Building: The Emergence of a New Mode of Governance....Pages 64-91 Who Intervenes? The volume shows how and why factors such as the emergence of the middle class, civil society organizations or non-electoral participation, do not seem to play the role that democratic theory suggests. The findings from Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines and Thailand, reveal how unique the region's paths to democracy are, in comparison to other regions, and particularly those of western liberal democracies, but also the substantial progress needed before transitional democracies become fully consolidated across Asia.--Provided by publisher Drawing on the fields of political economy and historical sociology, Lee dispels the overwhelming consensus among scholars that members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) never interfere in the internal affairs of other states, and pioneers a new approach to the understanding of regional politics in Southeast Asia Since the late 1990s, the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) has countered a myriad of 'outlaw' threats at sea including piracy, terrorism, the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and the threat posed by 'rogue states'. Japan's innovative strategy has transformed maritime security governance in Southeast Asia and beyond.
