Regionalism across the North South Divide is not for the novice reader. This book is a compilation of case studies from several authors and is very difficult to read. This book is nothing but fact after fact on several different countries. The writers present an entire idea in one sentence and move to the next idea, without allowing the reader to digest the information already presented. It is a shame this book is so poor because I am interested in the subject but don't feel I gained anything from this book. I would have given it one star but made it two because it does contain a lot of facts in relation to globalization in lesser-developed countries. The editors condensed way too much information into this book and lost the free-flow of thoughts and ease of comprehension. I would not recommend this book to anyone. An examination of the vital role played by some of the countries in the semi-periphery within the global order. The text examines their responses and reactions to global change, and the place of regionalism within their foreign economic policy. It represents an analysis of the role of the semi-periphery in creating the new regionalism which is emerging in the 1990s. Case studies cover Brazil and Mercosur, Chile, South East Asia, China, South Africa, the Maghreb, Turkey and Australia. These are framed by introductory chapters focusing on the creation of the semi-periphery in the context of globalization and regionalism, and the underlying theoretical perspectives and trends in approaching the subject Regionalism Across the North-South Divide charts the increasingly important trend of regional cooperation between the developed 'North' and the developing countries of the 'South'. It focuses on the responses and reactions of developing countries to the current wave of globalization and explores the state strategies adopted to create this 'new regionalism'. This study is invaluable for making sense of what regionalism means for the South and its insights contribute to a wider understanding of international relations, the relationship between globalization and regionalism and the possibility of cooperation within the developing world This book examines the trend towards regionalism in the contemporary world order. Until quite recently, studies of regionalism tended to focus on developments in theindustrialized areas and/or on the so-called Third World. However, the term 'ThirdWorld' has ceased to have much analytical significance and scholars have moved on toexamining instead the political economy of an increasingly interconnected global order. As one leading scholar of international political economy has phrased it, a 'main sourceof academic uncertainty and confusion ... has been the collapse of the Third Worldcoalition of less In contrast to most studies of regionalism, Grugel and Hout focus on countries not currently at the core of the global economy, including Brazil and Mercosur, Chile, South East Asia, China, South Africa, the Maghreb, Turkey and Australia. What seems clear from this original analysis is that far from being peripheral, these countries are forming regional power blocs of their own, which could go on to hold the balance of power in the new world order.
