This volume demonstrates that Critical Friendship Theory can help distinguish education doctorate (EdD) programs from research doctorates (education PhDs). Drawing on multiple, detailed case studies of CFT implementation at universities, it covers curriculum and implementation, online and in-person education, challenges, and strategies for success. The professional education doctorate - the EdD - has long been debated. What should its focus be, how should it be composed, and what should it prepare its recipients to accomplish? What, ultimately, distinguishes it from the PhD in education? The contributors to this volume demonstrate that Critical Friendship Theory can succeed in distinguishing and enriching EdD programs. Drawing on multiple, detailed case studies to examine how the CFT framework can be used to foster innovative pedagogy, develop creative dissertation-in-practice experiences, and resolve problems of practice, they build an argument that the implementation of Critical Friendship Theory helps to enhance the particular contributions EdD program graduates are trained to make Front Matter....Pages i-xvi Introduction....Pages 1-6 Front Matter....Pages 7-7 Critical Friends Groups: Moving beyond Mentoring....Pages 9-23 Critical Friends: Roles in Doctoral Program Development, Implementation, and Refinement....Pages 25-45 Critical Friends Groups from Afar: Can Long Distance Relationships Work?....Pages 47-59 Front Matter....Pages 61-61 Critical Friends’ Perspectives on Problems of Practice and Inquiry in an EdD Program....Pages 63-79 CPED as an Incubator for a Clinical Practice Approach to Professional Teacher Preparation at Washington State University: Finding and Promoting Mutual Contexts of Change....Pages 81-102 Growing Organically: Building on Strengths for Vermont Doctoral Education....Pages 103-119 Redesigning Preparation Programs for Teacher Leaders and Principals....Pages 121-141 Front Matter....Pages 143-143 Critical Friends Groups and Their Role in the Redefinition of the Online EdD in Higher Education Administration at Texas Tech University....Pages 145-159 Using a Cohort Approach to Convert EdD Students into Critical Friends....Pages 161-176 Criterion-inspired, Emergent Design in Doctoral Education: A Critical Friends Perspective....Pages 177-193 Epilogue....Pages 195-216 Back Matter....Pages 217-227 "A significant contribution to the needed re-invention of the education doctorate.
