Due to the aging population in the Western world, osteoporosis has become a major problem which is of interest to several medical disciplines: not only radiologists but also gynecologists, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, and orthopedic surgeons are involved in the management of this widespread condition. Functional imaging is becoming rapidly an important area of diagnostic radiology. Imaging of osteoporosis is another application of this recent addition to the armory of radiology. It is important that radiologists should be fully aware of the range of diagnostic modalities-conventional radiologic methods, dual X-ray absorptiometry, quantitative computed tomography, quantitative ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, etc. -that are now available for the diagnosis and the follow-up of osteoporosis, and know how to apply these sophisticated methods in daily clinical practice. Dr. S. Grampp is a radiologist with a longstanding interest in osteoporosis, and his previous publications on this condition are internationally known. He has been very successful in engaging several outstandingly qualified experts to contribute to the indi vidual chapters of this superb book, which provides a omprehensive c overview of our current knowledge of osteoporosis. I am confident that this volume will meet with great interest from radiologists and all other clinicians involved in the care of patients with osteoporosis and will encounter the same success as many previous volumes in this series. Front Matter....Pages i-x Front Matter....Pages 1-1 Pathophysiology and Aging of Bone....Pages 3-24 Pathophysiology of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Other Disorders....Pages 25-33 Therapeutic Approaches and Mechanisms of Drug Action....Pages 35-49 Orthopedic Surgery....Pages 51-57 Front Matter....Pages 59-59 Conventional Radiographs and Basic Quantitative Methods....Pages 61-86 Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry....Pages 87-100 Vertebral Morphometry....Pages 101-110 Spinal Quantitative Computed Tomography....Pages 111-114 Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography....Pages 115-129 Quantitative Ultrasound....Pages 131-141 Magnetic Resonance Imaging....Pages 143-152 Structure Analysis Using High-Resolution Imaging Techniques....Pages 153-164 Front Matter....Pages 165-165 Densitometry in Clinical Practice....Pages 167-173 Practical Cases....Pages 175-196 Back Matter....Pages 197-204 This book provides a comprehensive overview of osteoporosis, the pathologic conditions that give rise to osteoporosis, and the complications that are frequently encountered. After initial chapters devoted to pathophysiology, the presentation of osteoporosis on conventional radiographs is illustrated and discussed. Thereafter, detailed consideration is given to each of the measurement methods employed to evaluate osteoporosis, including dual x-ray absorptiometry, vertebral morphometry, spinal and peripheral quantitative computed tomography, quantitative ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. The role of densitometry in daily clinical practice is appraised. Finally, a collection of difficult cases involving pitfalls is presented, with guidance to their solution. The information contained in this volume will be invaluable to all with an interest in osteoporosis
