The British Army in Queen Victoria's reign had to fight a series of separate and unrelated regional campaigns across the northern half of Africa. The local conditions and peoples varied greatly, from the forest-dwellers of Asante to Moslem fundamentalists in the burning desert wastes of the Sudan, requiring considerable flexibility and professionalism from an Army often popularly held to be rigid and traditionalist. In many instances, the outcome of the ensuing fighting was by no means one-sided. This book focuses on the large-scale wars in northern Africa in which British regular troops were engaged throughout the 19th century, including those in Abyssinia, Asante, Egypt and the Sudan. Containing a number of rare contemporary photographs and eight colour plates, the book charts the history of these campaigns and describes the African groups against which they were waged. The Kingdom of Burma, based at Ava on the central reaches of the River Irrawaddy, lay in a strategic position which caused the British some disquiet.
