The most important technical expressions of the music publishing trade-such as the usual forms of publication and the relevant copyright problems-have been given due consideration. Similarly, the most important terms of broadcasting, television, records and film production have been included when related in any way with the conclusion of contracts. A few words on what this work does not pretend to be. It is not-indeed it cannot be by reason of the sheer size-a complete dictionary of the technical terms of the printing industry. Therefore, those who will look for the terms of the most advanced technology of polygraphy may be disappointed: they are advised to consult another dictionary. Nevertheless, we have tried to include words that are relevant-i.e. actually used-in the publisher/publisher or author/publisher connection. The use of the two main parts of the dictionary is self-explanatory. The equivalent words for a given English word in any of the languages are to be found in the same line. (Synonyms are separated by semicolons). When starting from one of the other 19 languages, in order to find the term in any other language, the user must look up the original word in the appropriate index, note the number, and turning to that page he will firtd the equivalent English word under the said number, together with all the other terms in foreign languages in the same line. (When translating from a language other than English into any other language, the English words found in the Index serve as an intermediary, mainly to facilitate finding the matching term in the target language.) In case a key word is divided into 1 and 2, meanings in the other languages can be found in the same line, unless one term stands for both. In addition to those institutions and persons who helped to revise the basic German edition, the following persons have rendered valuable assistance in compiling and revising the present, English one: Mme Marie Kulijevycova (Czech and Slovak), Mr. Ernst van Altena (Dutch), collaborators of the firm Ricordi e Cia, Milano (Italian), Mr. Gorm Baekkelund (Norwegian), Mrs. Edith Brandau (Portuguese). Lexiographica. Series Maior features monographs and edited volumes on the topics of lexicography and meta-lexicography. Works from the broader domain of lexicology are also included, provided they strengthen the theoretical, methodological and empirical basis of lexicography and meta-lexicography. The almost 150 books published in the series since its founding in 1984 clearly reflect the main themes and developments of the field.
The publications focus on aspects of lexicography such as micro- and macrostructure, typology, history of the discipline, and application-oriented lexicographical documentation.
