Psychiatry Under the Influence investigates the actions and practices of the American Psychiatric Association and academic psychiatry in the United States, and presents it as a case study of institutional corruption. Psychiatry Under the Influence investigates how the influence of pharmaceutical money and guild interests has corrupted the behavior of the American Psychiatric Association and academic psychiatry during the past 35 years. The book documents how the psychiatric establishment regularly misled the American public about what was known about the biology of mental disorders, the validity of psychiatric diagnoses, and the safety and efficacy of its drugs. It also looks at how these two corrupting influences encouraged the expansion of diagnostic boundaries and the creation of biased clinical practice guidelines. This corruption has led to significant social injury, and in particular, a societal lack of informed consent regarding the use of psychiatric drugs, and the pathologizing of normal behaviors in children and adults. The authors argues that reforming psychiatry will require the neutralization of these two corrupting influences-pharmaceutical money and guild interests-and the establishment of multidisciplinary authority over the field of mental health "Cover" -- "Title" -- "Copyright" -- "Dedication" -- "Contents" -- "List of Figures and Tables" -- "Foreword" -- "Acknowledgments" -- "Part I Seeds of Corruption" -- "CHAPTER ONE A Case Study of Institutional Corruption" -- "CHAPTER TWO Psychiatry Adopts a Disease Model" -- "CHAPTER THREE Economies of Influence" -- "Part II Science Corrupted" -- "CHAPTER FOUR The Etiology of Mental Illness Is Now Known" -- "CHAPTER FIVE Psychiatryâ#x80;#x99;s New Drugs" -- "CHAPTER SIX Expanding the Market" -- "CHAPTER SEVEN Protecting the Market" -- "CHAPTER EIGHT The End Product: Clinical Practice Guidelines" -- "Part III The Search for Solutions" -- "CHAPTER NINE A Society Harmed" -- "CHAPTER TEN Putting Psychiatry on the Couch" -- "CHAPTER ELEVEN Prescriptions for Reform" -- "Notes" Cover 1 Title 4 Copyright 5 Dedication 6 Contents 8 List of Figures and Tables 10 Foreword 12 Acknowledgments 14 Part I Seeds of Corruption 16 CHAPTER ONE A Case Study of Institutional Corruption 17 CHAPTER TWO Psychiatry Adopts a Disease Model 22 CHAPTER THREE Economies of Influence 39 Part II Science Corrupted 54 CHAPTER FOUR The Etiology of Mental Illness Is Now Known 55 CHAPTER FIVE Psychiatry’s New Drugs 73 CHAPTER SIX Expanding the Market 96 CHAPTER SEVEN Protecting the Market 125 CHAPTER EIGHT The End Product: Clinical Practice Guidelines 142 Part III The Search for Solutions 159 CHAPTER NINE A Society Harmed 160 CHAPTER TEN Putting Psychiatry on the Couch 177 CHAPTER ELEVEN Prescriptions for Reform 200 Notes 211 Index 235 Front Matter....Pages i-xiv Front Matter....Pages 1-1 A Case Study of Institutional Corruption....Pages 3-7 Psychiatry Adopts a Disease Model....Pages 9-25 Economies of Influence....Pages 27-41 Front Matter....Pages 43-43 The Etiology of Mental Illness Is Now Known....Pages 45-62 Psychiatry’s New Drugs....Pages 63-85 Expanding the Market....Pages 87-115 Protecting the Market....Pages 117-133 The End Product: Clinical Practice Guidelines....Pages 135-151 Front Matter....Pages 153-153 A Society Harmed....Pages 155-171 Putting Psychiatry on the Couch....Pages 173-195 Prescriptions for Reform....Pages 197-207 Back Matter....Pages 209-241
