Professional Rootkits (Programmer to Programmer)

معرفی کتاب «Professional Rootkits (Programmer to Programmer)» نوشتهٔ Ric Vieler، منتشرشده توسط نشر Wiley/Wrox در سال 2007. این کتاب در فرمت pdf، زبان انگلیسی ارائه شده است. «Professional Rootkits (Programmer to Programmer)» در دستهٔ بدون دسته‌بندی قرار دارد.

I get this book from school library. The first two chapters are pretty good and easy to follow. However, from chapter 3 and 4, the author focus TOO MUCH on function injection --- without much explaination. Especially for chapter 4, the author tries to demonstrate how to inject your own function to kernel.dll, but after a very short description, the author just list a bunch of source code without any explaination. The code covers kernel coding, assembly language (A LOT !!! and very important), PGP decoding, mapping machine code to assembly instruction... Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the author covers A LOT valuable information. For all those important stuff in chapter 4, there is no discussion except very short code comments. The later chapters have the same problem. In chapter 5, the TDI communication, the author just gave you a picture of the communication layer in windows, then jump into the code without any further discuss. I do not think this book will be of any use for beginers in kernel coding or rootkit developing. For most topics mentioned in the book, you can find much better examples on Internet. Even the dry MSDN is better than this book. I would recommend "Rootkits: Subverting the Windows Kernel" instead.

Whether you want to learn how to develop a robust, full-featured rootkit or you're looking for effective ways to prevent one from being installed on your network, this hands-on resource provides you with the tools you'll need. Expert developer Ric Vieler walks you through all of the capabilities of rootkits, the technology they use, steps for developing and testing them, and the detection methods to impede their distribution.

This book provides the detailed, step-by-step instructions and examples required to produce full-featured, robust rootkits. Presented in modular sections, source code from each chapter can be used separately or together to produce highlyspecific functionality. In addition, Vieler details the loading, configuration, and control techniques used to deploy rootkits. All ancillary software is fully detailed with supporting source code and links to the compilers, utilities, and scripts necessary to build and run every example provided.

What you will learn from this book

  • Complete coverage of all major rootkit technologies: kernel hooks, process injection, I/O filtering, I/O control, memory management, process synchronization, TDI communication, network filtering, email filtering, key logging, process hiding, device driver hiding, registry key hiding, directory hiding and more
  • Complete coverage of the compilers, kits, utilities, and tools required to develop robust rootkits
  • Techniques for protecting your system by detecting a rootkit before it's installed
  • Ways to create modular, commercial grade software
