"This book is the first full-length study of the development of Irish political print culture from the Glorious Revolution of 1688-9 to the advent of the Hanoverian succession in 1714. Based on extensive analysis of publications produced in Ireland during the period, including newspapers, sermons and pamphlet literature, this book demonstrates that print played a significant role in contributing to escalating tensions between tory and whig partisans in Ireland during this period. Indeed, by the end of Queen Anne's reign the public were, for the first time in an Irish context, called upon in printed publications to make judgements about the behaviour of politicians and political parties and express their opinion in this regard at the polls. These new developments laid the groundwork for further expansion of the Irish press over the decades that followed."-- Provided by publisher Preface and Acknowledgements 7 Contents 9 List of Figures 11 Editorial Note 12 Chapter 1 Introduction 13 Party Politics in Britain and Ireland 14 Print Trade and ‘Public Sphere’ 22 Wider Context 31 Approach 37 References 39 Part I External Influences 44 Chapter 2 News 45 False Starts 48 Expansion 54 Shifting Focus 60 References 68 Chapter 3 Commentary and Opinion 72 Experimentation 74 Consolidation 83 Reaction 94 References 100 Chapter 4 Church, State and Pulpit 107 Tackling the Sins of the Nation, 1689–1701 108 The Rage and Violence of Parties, 1702–1714 118 References 128 Part II Domestic Affairs 132 Chapter 5 Towards a Two-Party System, 1689–1699 133 Parliamentary Proceedings, 1692–1699 134 Political Print 146 Religious Print 154 References 163 Chapter 6 Moderate Schemes and Rising Tensions, 1699–1708 168 Rochester’s Administration and the Resumption Act, 1699–1703 169 Ormonde’s Administration, 1703–1707 174 Pembroke’s Administration, 1707–1709 189 References 196 Chapter 7 Whigs and Tories, 1709–1712 200 Wharton’s Whig Administration, 1709–1710 201 Ormonde’s Tory Administration, 1711–1712 215 References 229 Chapter 8 Crisis, 1713–1714 233 The Dublin Mayoralty Dispute, 1709–1713 234 The General Election and Parliamentary Session of 1713 242 Unrest 253 References 260 Chapter 9 Conclusion 263 Looking Back 263 Looking Forward 270 References 274 Index 275 Front Matter ....Pages i-xiii Introduction (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 1-31 Front Matter ....Pages 33-33 News (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 35-61 Commentary and Opinion (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 63-97 Church, State and Pulpit (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 99-123 Front Matter ....Pages 125-125 Towards a Two-Party System, 1689–1699 (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 127-161 Moderate Schemes and Rising Tensions, 1699–1708 (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 163-194 Whigs and Tories, 1709–1712 (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 195-227 Crisis, 1713–1714 (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 229-258 Conclusion (Suzanne Forbes)....Pages 259-270 Back Matter ....Pages 271-281
