This volume contains most of the papers delivered at a colloquium held in Aberystwyth in July 2011. I am grateful to the participants for their co-operation, which has made possible a fairly speedy printed version of the proceedings. The Colloquium, and the publication of these proceedings, was largely funded from the “indirect costs” accruing to Aberystwyth University from the AHRC’s grant (AH/E00685X/I) to the Anglo-Norman Dictionary for 2007-2012, a portion of which the University makes available to the Department of European Languages.
