This book is about reformatory-correctional institutions for scholars and engineers, called in Russian slang "sharashkas", the history of their creation (1929-1945) and their contribution to the economy and military potential of the USSR. Mikhail Morukov (b. 1977) writes about them not as one more instrument of repressions but rather as a highly effective economic system which is responsible for many technological discoveries and achievements of the soviet economy and as the necessary and the only correct measure and precondition of the Russian victory in WWII. One may not agree with the author in his understanding of the nature of the GULAG but still appreciate the volume of statistics on the issues presented in this book
