Although there is still no general agreement on the exact functions of linguistic pragmatics and the fields of activity it covers, it can generally be understood as the relationship of language to its users and the resultant practical applications of language. Thus it is one of the main concerns of research in this field to achieve a better understanding and account of the influence of extra-linguistic factors on language. Obwohl bis heute keine Einigkeit darüber besteht, was genau die Aufgaben der Sprachpragmatik sind und welche Tätigkeitsbereiche von ihr umfaßt werden, kann man darunter im weitesten Sinn das Verhältnis der Sprache zu ihren Benutzern und die daraus resultierenden praktischen Anwendungen von Sprache verstehen. Es ist daher auch ein Hauptanliegen dieser Forschungsrichtung, den Einfluß außersprachlicher Faktoren auf die Sprache besser verstehen und beschreiben zu können.

In der vorliegenden Einführung wird "Pragmalinguistik" als ein Teilbereich der allgemeineren "Pragmatik" verstanden. Sie will den linguistisch Interessierten mit den Problemen und Methoden dieser noch "offenen" Wissenschaftsdisziplin vertraut machen und ihre großen Themenbereiche vorstellen: Pragmalinguistik als allgemeine Zeichentheorie, als Sprechakttheorie, als Gesprächslinguistik und als Textlinguistik.
