"The standard reference for anyone interested in understanding flow cytometry technology."

––American Journal of Clinical Oncology

Practical Flow Cytometry provides the most readable and comprehensive resource covering the technology, principles, and biomedical applications of analytical cytology using laser-activated detection and cell sorting. This Fourth Edition of the discipline’s benchmark text is completely updated with several added features, including:

  • A completely revised introduction, emphasizing connections between flow cytometry, static cytometry, and microscopy
  • Expanded coverage of applications in biotechnology, cell biology, genetics, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and oncology
  • Discussion of new commercial instrumentation
  • Review of alternatives to flow sorting
  • Updated and enhanced references and supplier list

This book is required reading for anyone in immunology, cell and molecular biology, microbiology, oncology, or hematology.

This is a comprehensive treatment of flow cytometry and the diverse technologies that are used to prepare and analyze samples for analysis using flow cytometry. The information provided is useful to understand how to effectively use flow cytometry, including what went wrong and how to fix it, how to analyze the data generated, and how to improve the whole lot. The purpose is to ""include almost anything anyone might want, or need to know about flow cytometry."" With the continuing improvements to the technologies and increasing areas of application of flow cytometry, the current revision (currently in its third edition) represents a timely and needed expansion of earlier editions. This book is targeted at anyone who uses or wishes to use a flow cytometer. Although the treatment of all areas begins with fundamental principles, current areas of application and new technologies and applications are included, making the book of interest to beginners and experts alike. The presentation is uniform and the book is easy to read. Although the diversity of subject places significant demands on a single author, Dr. Shapiro is unique in this field in his comprehension of all these areas. The book includes a wealth of practical information, including a listing other books published on any aspect of flow cytometry, societies involved with this technology, and a listing of instrument and reagent sources. This book is an encyclopedia of flow cytometry. The only criticism might be that it covers every aspect of flow cytometry in considerable detail, sometimes more detail than a reader pushed by many demands wants (including why the flow cytometry experiment did not work). Most flow cytometrylaboratories already have previous editions placed near the cytometer, and the more sophisticated or advanced the laboratory, the more battered and used the book. With the improvements and expansion in this edition, it will likely sit next to previous and well-worn editions in most flow cytometry laboratories (including mine).
