The collection of thirty-four essays in this volume reflects the life-long teaching and research interests of Julian Chrysostomides, Director of the Hellenic Institute, Royal Holloway, University of London. They cover Byzantine history, historiography, hagiography, theology and monasticism, Latin rule in the Greek East, and Greek palaeography. The studies both encompass the latest research by the foremost authorities in the field, and provide editions of important texts which have never appeared in print before. These include two works relevant to the emperor Manuel II Palaeologus (1391-1425) - his own 'A Depiction of Spring in a Dyed, Woven Hanging', and a funeral oration on him by an unknown author - and writings by the 13th-century scholars Nicephorus Blemmydes and Constantine Acropolites. The 34 papers of this substantial festschrift were contributed by scholars of Byzantine history on the occasion of the retirement of the Byzantine historian Chrysostomides from Royal Holloway College of the U. of London, UK. The papers are divided into four major Byzantine history and historiography; Byzantine hagiography, theology, and monasticism; Latins in the Greek East; and Byzantine texts and paleography. The fourth section, and some articles in the other three which are in Greek, or contain lengthy texts in Greek, will be of use mainly to specialists. The remaining articles are of broader appeal, with topics that include the blinding of Romanus IV, the uses of history in Byzantine diplomacy, the monastery of the Holy Savior of Lingua Maris in Sicily, and William of Tyre and the Byzantine Empire. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) The collection of 34 essays in this volume reflects the life-long teaching and research interests of Julian Chrysostomides, Director of the Hellenic Institute, Royal Holloway, University of London. They cover Byzantine history, Latin rule in the Greek East, Greek palaeography, and more. The historical encounter of the Byzantine Emperor Romanus IV Diogenes and the Turkish Sultan Alp Arslan on the field of battle remains one of the more spectacular events in the seemingly unending military encounters between the Greek speaking and the Islamic worlds.
