Pictorial dictionary of ancient Athens. (Translated from Greek.)
معرفی کتاب «Pictorial dictionary of ancient Athens. (Translated from Greek.)» نوشتهٔ John Travlos، منتشرشده توسط نشر Thames and Hudson در سال 1971. این کتاب در فرمت djvu، زبان انگلیسی ارائه شده است.
This is the first comprehensive, systematic, illustrated survey of the topography and architecture of ancient Athens. It covers the entire period from 3000 bc until 300 ad, with many excursions into later times. Divided into eighty alphabetical sections, the dictionary describes, with a wealth of historical and physical detail, every important ancient site, building and monument in the city, from temples and private houses to aqueducts and fortifications. All the related sculpture is discussed, and the texts are illustrated with copious photographs, drawings, maps and plans, many of them either previously unpublished or specially prepared for this book. Each entry concludes with a full bibliography, which lists every available reference work on every relic. In the twenty-five years Professor Travlos has spent studying and excavating in Athens, a vast quantity of new finds and discoveries have been made, and there is almost certainly no other living person who knows so much, or is better equipped to write about the city’s topography. An architect by profession, he has won wide recognition for his reconstruction of the Attalos Stoa in Athens, as well as for his archaeological excavations at Eleusis, Megara, ancient Corinth, Isthmia and Pylos. He was awarded the Purfina Prize for his book The Development of the Plan of the Town of Athens. In common with Ernest Nash’s Pictorial Dictionary of Ancient Rome, this book was prepared in collaboration with the German Institute of Archaeology. It is certain to rank with Dr Nash’s great dictionary, and to take its place as an indispensable work of reference for every archaeologist, classicist, and serious student of the architecture, topography and history of Athens.
