This book presents the current feminist critique of science and the philosophy of science in such a way that students of the philosophy of science, philosophers, feminist theorists, and scientists will find the material accessible and intellectually rigorous. }This book presents the current feminist critique of science and the philosophy of science in such a way that students of philosophy of science, philosophers, feminist theorists, and scientists will find the material accessible and intellectually rigorous.Contemporary feminist debate, as well as the debate brought on by the radical critics of science, assumesincorrectlythat certain movements in philosophy of science and science-driven theory are understood in their dynamics as well as in their details. All too often, labels such as Kuhnian or positivistic are taken for granted, and much of the contemporary postmodern or post-structuralist feminist theory that sets out to criticize science does little to alleviate the readers lack of knowledge with regard to such movements. Unlike other texts, Philosophies of Science: Feminist Theories provides a student-oriented framework so that, for example, positivism is given a thorough grounding before the feminist critique of such epistemological theory is given. Other movements discussed include the Kuhnian turn, sociology of science, and the radical critique of science. Feminist theory and critique are interwoven throughout, with one chapter devoted to feminist thought, which includes the work of such thinkers as Longino, Hararway, Hubbard, Nelson, Harding, and Keller. } Contents......Page 8 Preface......Page 12 Acknowledgments......Page 14 Part One: The Growth of Philosophy of Science......Page 16 1 Philosophy of Science: An Overview......Page 18 Philosophy of Science and Its Origins......Page 19 The Postwar Moves......Page 20 Feminist Critique and Radical Critique......Page 21 New Disputes in Scientific Theorizing......Page 23 Sociology of Science and the New Theoreticians......Page 24 The Problem of Incommensurability......Page 25 History of Science and Its Impact......Page 27 2 Positivism and the Vienna Circle......Page 30 Early Positivistic Moves......Page 31 A Carnapian Contrast......Page 34 Foundationalism and Protocol Sentences......Page 36 The Motivation Behind Positivism......Page 38 The Vienna Circle and Its Discussants......Page 40 The Place of Value......Page 41 Reductionism and the Unity of Science......Page 43 Feminist Criticisms......Page 44 3 Positivist Influences......Page 47 The Operationalist Conundrum......Page 49 The Work of Popper......Page 51 The Turn Toward Weltanschauungen......Page 52 The Kuhnian and the Pre-Kuhnian......Page 54 Feyerabendian Twists......Page 57 The Pure View and Its Concomitants......Page 58 Introducing the Feminist Criticisms......Page 60 The New Epistemological Views......Page 62 Part Two: The New Moves in Science Studies......Page 66 4 Kuhnian Revolutions......Page 68 The Notion of Shift......Page 69 Theory Change......Page 71 A Feminist Overview......Page 72 Hesse and Metaphor......Page 74 Lakatosian Research Programs......Page 75 Toulmin and Change......Page 77 Watkins's Critique......Page 78 Hanson's Patterns......Page 80 The New Criticism......Page 81 5 Philosophy/Sociology of Science......Page 85 The Class Structure of Science......Page 87 The Social Structure of Knowledge......Page 89 Bloor and Social Imagery......Page 90 Winch, Philosophy, and the Social Sciences......Page 94 The Importance of Elster......Page 97 Bruno Latour......Page 99 Gleaning from Sociology of Science......Page 101 The Attack on the Critiques......Page 102 6 The Advent of Feminist Theory......Page 108 The Work of Haraway......Page 109 Harding's Whose Science?
