Celebrations Of Literary Fictions As Autonomous Worlds Appeared First In The Renaissance And Were Occasioned, Paradoxically, By Their Power To Remedy The Ills Of History. Robert E. Stillman Explores This Paradox In Relation To Philip Sidney's Defence Of Poesy, The First Renaissance Text To Argue For The Preeminence Of Poetry As An Autonomous Form Of Knowledge In The Public Domain. Offering A Fresh Interpretation Of Sidney's Celebration Of Fiction-making, Stillman Locates The Origins Of His Poetics Inside A Neglected Historical Community: The Intellectual Elite Associated With Philip Melanchthon (leader Of The German Reformation After Luther), The So-called Philippists. As A Challenge To Traditional Anglo-centric Scholarship, His Study Demonstrates How Sidney's Education By Continental Philippists Enabled Him To Dignify Fiction-making As A Compelling Form Of Public Discourse - Compelling Because Of Its Promotion Of Powerful New Concepts About Reading And Writing, Its Ecumenical Piety, And Its Political Ambition To Secure Through Natural Law (from Universal 'ideas') Freedom From The Tyranny Of Confessional Warfare. Intellectually Ambitious And Wide-ranging, This Study Draws Together Various Elements Of Contemporary Scholarship In Literary, Religious, And Political History In Order To Afford A Broader Understanding Of The Defence And The Cultural Context Inside Which Sidney Produced Both His Poetry And His Poetics. - Amazon. Introduction : Poetry And The Public Domain -- Famous Preachers And Teachers : Mediating The Cause -- The Noblest Scope : Reading, Writing, And Early Modern Poetics -- The Enjoying Of His Own Divine Essence : Poetry And Piety -- Captived To The Truth Of A Foolish World : Poetry And The Politics Of Tyranny -- Conclusion : Reproducing Cyrus : The Defence Of Poesy And A Cosmopolitan Culture Of Books. Robert E. Stillman. Includes Bibliographical References And Index. "Environmental awareness and social mobilization is a growing issue in Latin America. This book discusses how co-operative recycling practices have been increasingly used as a strategy to contest both the waste problem and urban poverty. Selective waste collection and sorting materials out of the garbage stream has become a widespread survival strategy for the economically excluded population. While severe and chronic occupational health problems and risks are very common among the recycling workers, thousands of people exclusively depend on accessing these resources. By examining experiences from Brazil and other Latin American countries, this book questions what can be done to improve the environment and livelihoods for these excluded citizens, examines the specific health and risk implications and looks at the many innovative recycling co-ops and associations which have recently emerged, creating an exciting new form of solidarity economy. In doing so, on the one hand, it uncovers the landscapes of despair populated by the urban marginalized, while on the other hand, the landscapes of hope, where solidarity and collaboration make a pathway to a better way of life."--Jacket Environmental awareness and social mobilization is a growing issue in Latin America. This title explores this paradox in relation to Philip Sidney's "Defence of Poesy", which argues for the preeminence of poetry as an autonomous form of knowledge in the public domain. By examining experiences from Brazil and other Latin American countries, this book examines what can be done to improve the environment and livelihoods for those involved in waste recycling. Offering a fresh interpretation of Philip Sidney's Defence of Poesy, Robert E. Stillman's intellectually ambitious study challenges traditional scholarship by identifying the impact of his education by the followers of Philip Melanchthon-the so-called Philippists-on his poetics, piety, and politics.
