Work in Bioengineering commenced at the University of Strathclyde in the Department of Mechanical Engineering some seventeen years ago in close cooperation with surgeons and physicians in Glasgow's teaching hospitals. Multidisciplinary medical/engineering project teams drawn from several of the relevant specialties worked in the University engineering laboratories, the hospital wards, the operating theatres and the medical research departments. The activity received organisational recognition in 1962 by the formation of a Medical Research Council Biomechanics Group. In the past ten years this has grown into an independent research and post-graduate teaching department-the Bioengineering Unit. The Unit is now in its new building, the Wolfson Centre which was funded by the Wolfson Trust and formally opened by Lady Wolfson on June 21st, 1972. To commemorate the occasion a Symposium was organised in association with the Biological Engineering Society during which recent advances and perspectives of developments world wide were discussed in the main areas of the Unit's activities.
