In Peripheral Arterial Disease: Diagnosis And Treatment, A Panel Of Recognized Experts Comprehensively Reviews The Clinical, Surgical, Radiological, And Scientific Aspects Of Atheroscleotic Peripheral Arterial Disease (pad), Large Vessel Vasculitis, And Thromboangiitis, Including Endovascular, Gene, And Drug Therapies. In Their Far-ranging Discussions, The Authors Examine In Depth The Risk Factors And Antiplatelet Therapies For Pad Patients In Danger Of A Heart Attack And/or Stroke, The Important Role Of Exercise Rehabilitation, The Surgical And Catheter-based Approaches To Revascularization, The Preoperative Evaluation, And The Perioperative Management Of The Vascular Patient. They Also Discuss The Special Problems Of Peripheral Arterial Disease In Women, Management Of The Diabetic Foot, Large Vessel Vasculitis, Thromboangiitis Obliterans, And Atheroembolism. Completing This Detailed Overview Is Important Information On Ameliorating The Risk Factors For Pad, Its Pathogenesis And Epidemiology, And The Physiological And Pathophysiological Basis Of Available Diagnostic Tests.
authoritative And Comprehensive, Peripheral Arterial Disease: Diagnosis And Treatment Provides A Detailed Accounting Of The Medical, Surgical, And Radiological Aspects Of Peripheral Arterial Obstructive Disease, Empowering Today's Clinicians And Specialists With The Knowledge And Skills Necessary To Diagnose And Treat This Important But Often Overlooked Disorder.

description:this Multiauthored Book Covers All Aspects Of Peripheral Arterial Disease Including Etiology, Hemodynamics, Diagnosis, And Medical/surgical/interventional Therapies In Its 19 Chapters.
purpose:the Purpose Is To Review Peripheral Arterial Disease With An Emphasis On Prevention Of The Disease. Treatment Here Remains Difficult.
audience:the Audience, Which Consists Of Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, And Cardiologists, Would All Find Material In This Book Worthwhile Since All Are Interested In Managing Peripheral Arterial Disease.
features:the Book Begins With A Discussion Of Endothelium As An Endocrine Organ Weighing One Percent Of The Body Mass. Many Endothelial Factors Are Reviewed In Terms Of Coronary Artery Risk Factors As Well As Atherosclerotic Risks And The Role Of Nitric Oxide. Peripheral Arterial Disease Is Caused By Atherosclerosis, Which Increases With Age. The Presence Of Peripheral Arterial Disease Suggests Coronary Artery Disease As Well As Carotid Artery And Other Peripheral Artery Involvement In As Many As 30 Percent Of Patients. In Some Ways, Peripheral Arterial Disease Can Be Regarded As A Marker Of Atherosclerosis. Ncep Iii Guidelines Recommend Secondary Prevention Goals For Cholesterol In Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease. Tests Are Reviewed And The Importance Of The Ankle/brachial Index Is Repeated. Of Some Interest Is The Comment That Any Improvement With An Intervention In The Peripheral Arterial System Ought To Be Accompanied By An Increase In The Ankle/brachial Index Of At Least 0.15. The Uses And Limitations Of Ct Scans, Mra, Dsa, And The Standard Angiograms Are Reviewed. Thrombolytic Therapy And Surgery Are Reviewed In Acute Limb Ischemia. Complications Caused By Reperfusion Injury, The Need For Fasciotomy, And Anticoagulation Are Discussed. Medical Management Of Peripheral Arterial Disease Has Great Limitations And Only Two Medications Currently In Use: Pentoxifylline And Cilostazol. Material On Angiogenesis, Endovascular Stenting, And Surgical Revascularization Are Discussed, Compared, And Contrasted -- Where Data Is Available. The Treatment Of Atherosclerotic Embolus Remains Problematic. The Role Of Coumadin Anticoagulation And The Etiology Of Abdominal Aortic Sclerosis Are Controversial. There Is A Good Chapter On Unusual Presentations Of Large Cell Vasculitis, E.g. Pmr, Giant Cell Arteritis, And Takayasu's Arteritis.
assessment:overall, About One-third Of The Book Is Devoted To Workup And Diagnosis Of Peripheral Arterial Patients, And Two-thirds Is Devoted To Treatments. Atherosclerotic Risk Factors Are Often Reviewed And In A Somewhat Repetitive Fashion. This Is Probably Important. The Treatment Of Peripheral Arterial Disease Is Difficult, But It Is Of Some Interest That The Physiologic Studies Of The Peripheral Arterial System Have Been In Progress For Years. Many Of The Available References Are Good, Including Older Ones Such As mcdonald's Blood Flow In Arteries: Theoretical, Experimental And Clinical Principles, 4th Edition, By Nichols And O'rourke (arnold, 1998), As Well As The Writings Of A. C. Burton. The Thrust Of This Book Is That Most Treatments Are Limited And The Overall Emphasis Is On Prevention And Management Of All Risk Factors. This Is A Good Book That Brings Together All Of The Available Information In A Readily Accessible Format.
