This book represents a significant contribution to the field of women's history in the United States by making a vast amount of current information easily accessible to students. A wide range of woman-related topics contain succinct explanations of often complex concepts. Coverage of controversial topics such as abortion, birth control, the right-to-life movement, and reproductive rights is thorough and without apparent bias. The alphabetical arrangement, index, and numerous cross-references facilitate ease of use. Titles of books for further reading appear at the end of each entry. Included are notable women in many fields, historical events, groups and organizations, and professions. Rachel Carson, Sally Ride, and Margaret Mead are some of the names profiled in science; Georgia O'Keefe and Mary Cassatt are among those mentioned in the field of art. Maxine Hong Kingston, Patsy Takemoto Mink, and Amy Tan represent notable Asian American women; Latinas include Joan Baez and Luisa Moreno; and African Americans include Mary McLeod Bethune, Phillis Wheatley, and Maya Angelou. A time line of relevant dates in U.S. history begins with the birth of Virginia Dare in 1587 and includes significant events concluding with the appointment of Madeleine Albright as Secretary of State. Early dates center around the pilgrims, ignoring Spanish settlements of the South and Southwest. There is also an appendix containing a listing of museums and historical sites, a bibliography of books, and a list of general and subject-specific Web sites with annotations. Matthews has obviously tried to include minority women. Some omissions are understandable because historical information on minority women is scarce.Black-and-white illustrations add interest, although some lack clarity. An interesting book to browse, it contains tidbits of information on many topics not often found in a single source. Most students will use it for reference, a purpose for which it will serve admirably. 2000, Oxford University Press, 368p, Index, Photos, Biblio., Further Reading, Chronology, Appendix, PLB.
