This two-volume work presents social cohesion and demographic challenges that are associated with low birth rates and population ageing. It does so from the perspective of citizens and key policy actors. The work analyses peoples’ attitudes about demographic trends and expectations towards private networks and public policies. It places these in the societal context of national specificities in the fourteen countries and regards them as part of the dynamics of the European integration process. Volume 1 focuses on research findings related to family issues. Its main topics are: attitudes towards family and family change, value of children, fertility intentions, and views on work-family-balance. Particular attention is given to the acceptance of and expectations about family-policies. Additionally, the reader finds methodological and theoretical chapters and learns about the background of the DIALOG project. This book is the outcome of the DIALOG research project, funded by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Programme. 1402066082......Page 1 European Studies of Population Volume 16/1......Page 2 People, Population Change and Policies......Page 4 Acknowledgment......Page 6 Contents......Page 7 1 Introduction......Page 12 Part I Theoretical Background, Methods and Opportunities for Analyses of the International Population Policy Acceptance Study Database (IPPAS)......Page 27 2 From Population Policy Acceptance Surveys to the International Database......Page 28 3 Selected Statistical Methods to Analyse IPPAS......Page 55 4 Pathways of Welfare and Population-related Policies......Page 66 Part II Attitudes Towards (The Change of) The Family......Page 98 5 Attitudes Towards Forms of Partnership......Page 99 6 Family Transformations in the Post-Communist Countries: Attitudes Toward Changes......Page 119 Part III Value of children......Page 144 7 Motivation to have Children in Europe......Page 145 8 Intergenerational Changes in the Value System in Europe......Page 160 9 Attitudes and Intentions Toward Childlessness in Europe......Page 179 Part IV Fertility Intentions......Page 214 10 Will weWitness an Upturn in European Fertility in the Near Future?......Page 215 11 Fertility Preferences and Expectations Regarding Old Age......Page 242 12 The Influence of Education and Family Policies on Age at First Birth......Page 257 Part V Reconciliation ofWork and Family......Page 274 13 Preferences Regarding Reconciliation of Family and Professional Life Versus Reality......Page 275 14 Reconciliation of Work and Family Within Different Institutional Settings......Page 294 15 Work-Family Orientation and Female Labour Market Participation......Page 314 Part VI Family Related Policies......Page 339 16 Family Policies: Financial or Institutional Measures?......Page 340 17 Anticipated Impact of Family Policies on Fertility Behaviour Among the Childless and Among One-Child Parents......Page 361 18 Preferences Versus Actual Family Policy Measures......Page 383 References......Page 403 Index......Page 422 This two-volume work presents social cohesion and demographic challenges that are associated with low birth rates and population ageing.
