Description:This book is a structured course description for teaching Bright Futures, a health promotion initiative designed with the pediatric population in mind. It provides education for the educator as well as an outline of how teaching sessions may proceed.
Purpose:The purpose is to assist in teaching the Bright Futures program to better integrate its principles into clinical practice, thereby improving the care of pediatric patients. The book appears to meet these goals.
Audience:It is written in such a way to allow it to be used to educate students, residents, and general practitioners. It is targeted at anyone providing ongoing health supervision for children.
Features:The book presents a curriculum designed to reach the six core concepts needed for positive health encounters. This is done in multiple sessions employing a wide variety of teaching strategies including care management, role playing, and consensus building. It describes well the important issues and how the teacher can best help the students to learn the core concepts offered.
Assessment:This appears to be an informative and well thought out means to teach the Bright Futures concepts. The skills reviewed can be used to teach at any level -- students, housestaff, and staff. The combination of teaching skills information and Bright Futures core concepts provide an excellent means to make this program a valuable tool for present and future pediatricians.
