The conference reported in this volume was made possible only by the joint efforts of a number of persons and organisations. We should like first to thank SIPRI for providing the venue for the conference, for their hospitality and for the administrative arrangements, including much editorial work. The chapters deal with the statistical treatment of armament and disarmament, with macroeconomic analysis of the impact of military expenditure, particular on growth, in theory and in practice, in developed and developing countries, with the anatomy of the arms industry themselves, and with the strategic / economic approaches to the dynamics of armaments.
