For the first time, this book offers an edition of the Early High German translation of the tractate __Epistola ad Mahumetem__. The humanist Michael Christan translated this key work by Pope Pius II from the Latin original in the late 15^th^ century. It describes the Pope’s offer of conversion to Sultan Mehmed II. This first edition thus serves to document the rising journalistic interest in Turkey in the waning 15^th^ century. Mit diesem Buch liegt zum ersten Mal eine Edition der frühneuhochdeutschen Übersetzung des Traktats Epistola ad Mahumetem vor. Der Humanist Michael Christan übersetzte im ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert dieses für die osmanisch-christlichen Beziehungen zentrale Werk des Papstes Pius II. (Enea Silvio Piccolomini) aus dem Lateinischen. Mehr noch als der tatsächliche Kreuzzug des Papstes wirkte sein literarischer Kreuzzug in der Epistola und weiteren Schriften nach. Schließlich wurde das lateinische Ausgangswerk Piccolominis selbst zur wichtigsten Quellen des frühneuzeitlichen Osmanenbildes. Die Edition der Übersetzung liefert somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Humanismusforschung, zur Germanistik, wie auch für die mittelalterliche sowie frühneuzeitliche Kirchengeschichte.
