Papers and Correspondence of William Stanley Jevons : Volume V Correspondence, 1879–1882

With this volume, covering the brief period from January r879 until Jevons's death, the se ries containing his professional and personal correspondence is completed. The fact that it contains a greater number ofletters than Volume II, which covered thirteen years, and almost as many as Volume III, which covered nine, is indicative of Jevons's increased stature and wider cirele of correspondents. In the four years covered by this volume Jevons's contacts with such long-standing correspondents as Walras, Palgrave, Foxwell and John Mills continued. His other correspondence for the most part reflected his changing interests -sun spots and the trade cyele are discussed in letters from such men as A. M. de Foville and F. B. Edmonds, while the socioeconomic problems which Jevons took up in papers such as 'Married Women in Factories' 1 generated a variety ofletters from correspondents outside the usual cireles of economists and statisticians. Within those cireles perhaps the most notable new name to be added to the list ofthose with whomJevons corresponded was F. Y. Edgeworth, but although the two men became elose friends in these years few letters passed between them because both lived within a short distance of each other in Hampstead. Abroad, the number of Italian economists who corresponded with J evons increased, with the addition of such names as Luigi Cossa and Amilcare Puviani.
