Description:This is a comprehensive review of all aspects of pain and its management in the pediatric population. It is unique in that it is the only book available on this topic. The first edition was published in 1993.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of pain in children, including the pathophysiology and psychological factors that cause pain, treatment strategies for pain management, and an in-depth review of specific clinical problems associated with pain, such as childhood cancer. This book certainly meets the worthwhile objectives.
Audience:The target audience includes pediatric residents, pediatric nurses, general pediatricians and a variety of pediatric subspecialists including pediatric intensivists, hematology-oncologists, neurologists, anesthesiologists and anyone taking care of pediatric patients postoperatively. The three editors are professors in pediatrics and are all directors of pain management teams at their respective universities.
Features:This review of pediatric pain is divided into three sections: theoretic perspectives, therapeutic interventions, and specific pain problems. This book expertly covers this important topic, particularly the rapidly expanding scientific knowledge base, consequences of inadequate pain management, and new adjuvant therapies.
Assessment:This book provides an excellent review of this rapidly evolving field and would be a worthwhile addition to a pediatric library. The renewed emphasis placed on the identification and management of pain by JCAHO makes this book even more valuable as a reference for physicians and nurses who practice in hospitals.
