This handbook provides a concise description of hematologic disorders, initial steps in diagnosis, and an overview of treatment. Key areas include a listing of useful Internet sites and a quick reference for hematologic emergencies. The purpose is to provide a concise yet complete guide to hematologic disorders. The appropriate audience is physicians who are not specialists in hematology, post-doctoral fellows, residents, and medical students. This book provides a brief description of hematologic disorders, tests required for evaluation, and a listing of treatment options. The first section is arranged as a differential diagnosis for specific findings on physical examination. I found the index of hematologic emergencies on the inside cover and list of web sites very useful. Recent discoveries such as Prothrombin 20210 and Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase mutations are mentioned briefly as future directions in the evaluation of thrombophilia. American readers may have a problem with English abbreviations, but a full list of abbreviations is provided. This handbook is an excellent resource for the clinician to evaluate hematologic abnormalities. It provides a differential diagnosis and the initial tests to order before referral to a hematologist, and it fits into a coat pocket. It is easier to follow and provides much more information than similar pocket books such as Mazza's Manual of Clinical Hematology, 2nd Edition (Little Brown and Company, 1995). A special bonus is the listing of web pages and list of hematologic emergencies.
