Description:This is a rather complete and user-friendly portable handbook highlighting various aspects of clinical pharmacy.
Purpose:The purpose is to share essential information about the practice of clinical pharmacy with the goal of assisting pharmacists in optimizing medication therapy to achieve the greatest benefit while causing the least harm. The book provides users with information that pharmacists should find useful and applicable in their areas of practice, in a format that truly is portable and pocket sized. These goals are certainly met.
Audience:The audience is pharmacists and pharmacy students, although it certainly can be of interest to other healthcare workers and healthcare/medical students. The editors chose contributors who have established themselves as experts in their particular practice areas.
Features:The amount of information this small book contains is really remarkable. It covers such practical topics such as clinical pharmacy skills, professionalism, interpretation of clinical trials and evidence-based medicine, pharmacy automation, then specific topics in patient care management and therapeutics. One would need to purchase or refer to several references to capture all the material that is provided in this user-friendly handbook. Certainly, the highlights of the topics are pointed out, providing users with key points. The easy to use index and sections/chapters show the clear thought process that went into editing the book. For a first edition, this is a job well done.
Assessment:This is the first truly pocket-sized book I've seen that covers such a wide array of clinical pharmacy topics. This one reminds me of years ago when I was a pharmacy resident composing my own "pharmacy peripheral brain" that consisted of my notes on a wide variety of topics to have nearby as a handy reference. This is the best portable reference I have come across with the topics that nearly all pharmacists will find useful in their areas of clinical practice. Certainly, as changes in therapeutic and evidence-based medicine occur, this handbook should be updated.
